First Robotic Adventure – Robô Bombeiro

On last May 6th, IEEE ISCTE-IUL SB was present in Robô Bombeiro 2013 Contest under the team name IEEE Firefighter.

\r\n

It is a classic robotics competition, in which each team creates and assembles a robot that must be able to navigate through a maze, detect a fire within one of the four rooms and extinguish it. At last, the robot must return to exact place where it started its run.

\r\n

\r\nThe contest was divided in 3 main categories: standard, senior and walking robots and special competitions as technical poster and video presentations. IEEE Firefighter team challenged the senior competition course and technical poster

\r\n

It was 3 weeks of hard work assembling motors, sensors and other parts, coding the algorithm, testing solutions and, having fun.

The journey required an overnight stop in Cabeço do Pião (at Pousada da Juventude do Fundão).

\r\n

It is an amazing place to spend holydays in direct contact with Mother Nature’s best, close to Zêzere river.

On Competition’s day, the team woke up by the morning and arrived at Guardaat 09 AM for the remaining tests.

\r\n

Some difficulties were found, as example, the environment conditions and the heat inside São Miguel Sports Halls motivated some sensors calibration (and many re-calibrations).

\r\n

At 01 PM the team had lunch and at 03 PM the competition started.

The IEEE Firefighter team began the competition the best way, being the fastest robot to find the candle and extinguishing the fire and, also returning to the initial point. This way, at the end of the first run, our team was classified in the 1st place.

\r\n

Second run history was slightly different:  IEEE Firefighter team was fast to discover the candle and blow it, but, it lost it way home. This turn our robot attained the 5th place on the second run, being 2nd in general ranking.

\r\n

In the last run it wasn’t as successful as the previous ones: it soon lost its track and did not found the candle.

As final result, IEEE Firefighter team was classified in an honorable 7th place out of 22.

\r\n

It is important to remember that it was the first time that IEEE ISCTE-IUL SB, heavily supported in its Robotics and Automation Student Chapter members, entered a robotics competition.

\r\n

Special thanks to the event’s organization, which created the conditions for event´s success, as well as, to ISCTE-IUL and IEEE Portugal for supporting our team’s participation.

\r\n

PS: It was interesting to verify the pro-activity and collaboration between entire academic community (teachers and students) of Instituto Politécnico da Guarda. “Bem hajam!”
